TWA 002 | New York, NY | TWA Hotel Art | Photography Art Print
from $37.00
Bring a piece of the famed TWA Hotel home with you with 'TWA 002,' a gallery-grade fine art photography print made by Chris Jeyes (@Electronic_Viewfinder). Available rolled or framed in a minimalist hardwood frame, this is the perfect piece of wall art to bring your bedroom, living room or other home decor ideas to life.
ABOUT THE PRINT
TWA 002 was made during the hotel’s re-opening in 2019. I’d been fascinated by the space since I was a kid, so when they reopened, I booked the very first weekend I could and it did not disappoint. On the second floor of the main terminal building was a huge glass fascia with wall to wall red carpet. As the sun set, I sat in one of the funky little seating areas and thought about what it must have felt like to travel during this era. Its something I think about every time I look at the print now. It hangs in my own home 🙂.
ABOUT THE TWA TERMINAL
Eero Saarinen was a renowned Finnish-American architect and designer known for his innovative and influential work in the mid-20th century. One of Eero Saarinen's most iconic projects is the TWA Flight Center, also known as the TWA Terminal, which was a groundbreaking and visionary design for its time.
The TWA Terminal project was commissioned by Trans World Airlines (TWA) in the late 1950s as part of the expansion of the John F. Kennedy International Airport (then known as Idlewild Airport) in New York City. Saarinen was tasked with designing a terminal building that would not only serve as a functional hub for airline passengers but also as a symbol of the Jet Age and the modern era of air travel.
Saarinen's design for the TWA Terminal was groundbreaking in its architectural approach. It featured a dramatic and futuristic form with a curved, wing-like roof that appeared to float above the terminal's main building. The innovative use of reinforced concrete and sweeping, organic shapes gave the terminal a sense of fluidity and motion, reflecting the speed and excitement of air travel.
Construction of the TWA Terminal began in 1959 and was completed in 1962. The terminal's interior spaces were designed with a focus on passenger comfort and convenience, with open, airy spaces and abundant natural light. The departure lounge featured iconic sunken seating areas and futuristic pod-like information desks.
The TWA Terminal is widely regarded as a masterpiece of mid-century modern architecture and is considered one of Eero Saarinen's most significant works. It exemplifies the "Googie" architectural style, which embraced futuristic and space-age design elements. The terminal became an instant cultural icon and a symbol of the optimism and excitement of the 1960s.
Over the years, the TWA Terminal underwent various changes and additions to accommodate the evolving needs of the airline industry. However, by the early 2000s, it was no longer in use as a terminal. In 2019, the terminal was meticulously restored and repurposed as part of the TWA Hotel, a hotel that pays homage to the golden age of aviation. The restoration aimed to preserve the architectural integrity and historical significance of Saarinen's design.
Eero Saarinen's TWA Terminal remains a beloved architectural icon, celebrated for its innovative design and enduring influence on airport architecture and modernist design principles. It continues to captivate visitors and travelers with its timeless beauty and sense of adventure.

BEHIND THE VIEWFINDER
My name is Chris Jeyes; born and raised in CT, but settled in Brooklyn because I enjoy the pizza, bagels and high-cost of living. I started my career in advertising before moving in-house to lead production for Land Rover. What started as just “bringing a camera to set,” eventually morphed into me photographing John Mayer for the re-launch of the iconic Defender model. Since then I’ve photographed Olympic Athletes, million-dollar race cars, professional BMX Riders, the most exclusive concours on the east coast and my mothers idol (Martha). I love what I do, and when I'm not being paid to shoot, I’m still shooting. My camera is a constant reminder to slow-down, look around and be present and my style is defined by aspirational realism - think documentary in nature, composed with an eye towards fine art. I have a wonderfully energetic red-headed one-year-old daughter and a Sicilian wife. My days are packed wall to wall but I wouldn't change it for the world.
